EU Proposes to Strengthen the Migration Limits of Aluminium in Toys

On December 10, 2018, the European Commission has notified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) of a proposal to strengthen the migration limits of aluminium under the Toy Safety Directive. The proposal is expected to be adopted in the second quarter of 2019 and enter into application 18 months after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

Background

According to the most recent available data on the toxicity of aluminium, the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) has considered a tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 0.3 mg/kg body weight per day as an appropriate base for revising the migration limits for aluminium from toys. Since children are exposed to aluminium also through sources other than toys, only 10% of the TDI is applied for the calculation of the resulting migration limits.
