Canada Publishes SOR/2018-196 Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations

The Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations: SOR/2018-196 have been published under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The Regulations establish requirements such as the prohibition on the import, sale, and use of processed asbestos fibers.

The Regulations will also prohibit the manufacture, import, sale, and use of products containing processed asbestos fibers and of consumer products containing naturally occurring asbestos in greater than trace amounts, with a limited number of exceptions.

The regulations come into force on December 30, 2018.

Since these regulations are more stringent than the existing Asbestos Products Regulations under the Canada Consumer Products Safety Act, the existing regulations will be repealed on December 30, 2018 when SOR/2018-196 comes into force.
